This delightful mod brings Elden Ring’s community spirit into Final Fantasy 14-

Mods are a contentious issue in the FF14 community, being that they’re against the terms of service. Just in case, let me caveat my explainer of this delightful mod with the statement that I don’t use it, and that I got these screenshots from an unnamed friend.

In a broader sense, I’m generally against mods that impact your gameplay, such as the ones that caused a fuss during the Dragonsong’s Reprise (Ultimate) controversy last year. We don’t need a World of Warcraft-style arms race between developer and modder.

However, some mods add such great features that I’m shocked they’re not a part of the core experience, such as the Orange Guidance Tomestone mod, which is available via the Dalamud plugin.

Final Fantasy 14 is ripe for in-jokes, with a beloved story and a…

The new Street Fighter 6 character is really into nail art-

Street Fighter 6’s next character is “A.K.I.,” a tall, sinuous woman with poisonous fingernails who’ll make her series debut this fall. In her teaser trailer, Aki delights in poisoning someone who just wanted to buy some medicine, stalking about them in a circle and describing the horrible effects of the botulinum toxin she’s just dosed them with. Not very nice!

SF6’s official accounts describe Aki as “a maniacal poison aficionado” who “can’t wait to sink her nails into her opponents.” Some are speculating she might be the heir to, or apprentice of, poison master F.A.N.G. from Street Fighter 5. Either way it’s clear she’s squarely in the villain camp.

Tall and armed with long vicious claws atop her fingernails, Aki has a few places she could obviously slot in SF6’s lin…

Helldivers 2 director weighs in on Elden Ring- Shadow of the Erdtree’s difficulty- ‘A game for everyone is a game for no one’-

Despite its critical success, most of the discourse surrounding Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree involves how difficult the game is, with many players bogged down by brutal boss fights and an unforgiving environment. It got so bad that the DLC is currently at Mixed reviews on Steam as many players agree it’s too hard to be enjoyable, but even still, there are some fans who think the high skill ceiling is a great feature and one that makes FromSoft games stand out.

One such person is Helldivers 2 director Johan Pilestedt, who recently began replying to Shadow of the Erdtree players, discussing its difficulty and talking about why he actually likes it. “The games industry is now big enough for there to be so many exciting experiences for all audiences,” Pilestedt says. “I try…

The RTX 4060 Ti 16GB tests a little slower than the 8GB version-

The launch of the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB has come and gone—apparently. Dave called it “a truly cynical graphics card, an almost petulant one” and I don’t disagree. A quick check at Newegg reveals listings for several models, with all six being out of stock. It’s not all that cynical to suggest it’s being withheld to avoid negative press. The RTX 4060 Ti 8GB was already the recipient of a frosty reception, and with a 25% higher asking price, the 16GB model faces an uphill battle. To put it mildly.

You might have expected one or two reviewers to get hold of a card through back channels, or snag one from a distributor, but it just hasn’t happened. That tells you a lot about the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB. It’s a card Nvidia, its AIB partners, and—at $500—consumers have little enthu…

Twitch is shuttering its services in South Korea next year, claiming network fees are ’10 times more expensive than in most other countries’-

Twitch has announced it’s pulling its service from South Korea in less than three months, citing high operation costs as the reason why.

In a blog post on its website, CEO Dan Clancy offered an explanation to the shutdown: “Ultimately, the cost to operate Twitch in Korea is prohibitively expensive and we have spent significant effort working to reduce these costs so that we could find a way for the Twitch business to remain in Korea.”

Clancy goes on to say that despite reducing maximum source quality to 720p and experimenting with a peer-to-peer model, “our network fees in Korea are still 10 times more expensive than in most other countries. Twitch has been operating in Korea at a significant loss, and unfortunately there is no pathway forward for our business to run m…

Untitled Goose game team announces Big Walk, an online cooperative ‘walker-talker’-

Big Walk is a game about hanging out and getting lost in a big weird world, and it’s currently in development by the team who brought us Untitled Goose Game and Push Me Pull You. Announced at the 2023 Game Awards, it’s coming in 2025.

The Big Walk Steam page describes it as “a cooperative multiplayer adventure about teamwork and talking”, but it also seems to be about doing amusingly dumb stuff in a big open world. For example: sliding down big bumpy slopes, jumping into mysterious yellow holes, and balancing across bridges without guard rails (dangerous!).

There’s also a focus on just hanging out too: looking at sunsets and riding trains. For the mean folk, you’ll be able to “steal your friend’s binoculars and kick them into the ocean”, for some reason.

“Set out…

Van Gogh Museum’s event gets gatecrashed by Pokemon TCG scalpers in a prime example of ‘why we can’t have nice things’-

As reported by VGC, the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam was recently swarmed by scalpers, looking to make a quick buck off Pikachu and his cute grey hat during a limited-time event.

“Go on a Pokémon Adventure along Van Gogh’s paintings,” the website for the museum describes in a description for an event celebrating the museum’s 50th anniversary. “Discover the stories about the masterpieces. Follow the clues, complete the quest, and hand in your answers for a special Pikachu x Van Gogh Museum promo card to add to your Pokémon collection (subject to availability).”

While I do have conflicted feelings about seeing Pikachu rendered in Van Gogh’s style, seeing as the little critter’s custom-designed to sell cards packs, toys, and games—this mostly strikes me as a…

Valve releases Dota 2 patch notes written entirely in emojis-

New Dota 2 patch notes dropped today, and they’re a little different than most, because they’ve been rendered entirely in emojis. That makes them very difficult to read, but it hasn’t deterred the Dota 2 community, which has whipped up a 55-page document that translates the whole thing.

This is what it the actual patch notes look like on Steam—there are multiple pages, this is just a chunk from the middle I selected at random:

There are obviously patterns to be seen and plenty of numbers indicating changing values, and that inspired Dota 2 fans who are cleverer and more patient than I am to get to work on a translation. The effort began in this long, large Reddit thread, and soon moved to a shared Google document. After some early headaches with a troll who apparently …

With free rules and a new game mode, Warhammer 40,000 is looking a lot cheaper to get into in its new edition-

Back in March, Games Workshop announced a new, 10th edition of its long-running flagship game Warhammer 40,000. With streamlined rules, less books to reference, and more readable unit profiles, GW is hoping to make the complicated wargame much more accessible this time around—and that extends to its cost, too.

Playing Warhammer has never exactly been cheap—in recent years falling somewhere between golf and collecting black market human organs—but 10th edition looks to be making it much cheaper to take your first steps into the grim darkness of the far future. GW has released the 10th edition rules for free, where previously players have had to buy expensive core rulebooks. In the coming weeks, rules for the game’s many different playable factions will also …
